I get a lot of calls from people whose credit is bad, or who have CCJs (County Court Judgements) against their name. What can you do if this is the case?

Well, you can try to erase or ameliorate these black marks. First you check what a bank might find out about you, when they do a credit check. Go to Experian and Equifax.

Order your credit report from BOTH sites, as there may be different entries in each. Make sure you give the same name and address as you normally have on your bills. If you moved recently (in the past two years), give your old address as well. You're dealing with a bureaucracy, and big computerised databases. They can only find what you tell them; if you give incorrect information, you may not get the full picture.

You can also apply to the County Court to satisfy outstanding judgements against you, and have this entered in their records; it'll still count as a mark against you, but it will be more of a dark purple instead.

The lower the annual percentage rate (APR) the less UK bank loans costs will be. Interests on UK bank loans are charged in one of two ways, as either a fixed or variable rate. Fixed interest rate is guaranteed for the whole term of the UK bank loan and it will not be subject to market fluctuations. The variable interest rate is usually lower than fixed interest rates in the beginning; however they do not offer the security of a fixed interest rate, incorporating a risk element in your finances.

In order to give you their best UK bank loans, the bank you apply to will need at least your:

  • Name;
  • Address (with post code);
  • Time at that address;
  • Amount you want to borrow;
  • Employment (how long in your current job);
  • If you have a bank account (and how long you've had it).

You may have to get used to the idea of getting cold calls from other banks or loan companies for weeks or months afterwards. Try to stop this by telling the initial bank loan department: "Please do not sell or pass my personal data on to any other bank or loan company. Thank you."

How can YOU get the BEST deals on UK bank loans?

Answer:

- Do some research.

- Get written quotes from four banks.

- Improve your credit rating.

+ Don't just pick a bank out of a newspaper. Ask friends. Use the internet! This is a major buying decision. It makes sense to spend a bit of time shopping around.

+ Verbal quotes are not worth the paper they're printed on; get them in writing, and get more than one.

+ You can improve your UK bank loans credit rating by only having one or two credit-cards, for example, and paying them off on time. Get rid of credit facilities you don't need.

+ The smaller you can make your UK bank loans, the better. UK bank loans, like credit-cards, are an expensive way to get money. If you can beg or borrow from friends or relatives to bulk up your cash-at-hand, do so. You'll feel a lot happier if you're only paying a few hundred, rather that £1K+ per month.

Consumer Tip:

I have a confession to make: I'm a supercilious devil. I get a lot of emails from people enquiring about item I know are wasting my time. They've been to two dozen web sites, sent each one a one-line email saying "Help me give it to me NOW", sometimes adding "for free!". When you do give a (considered) reply, you hear nothing back. The best ones are the out-and-out leeches. They'll call you up, asking detailed questions, say thanks very much, then take their product-related business(?) elsewhere (if they can bear to lever open their wallets at all). I used to wonder why item vendors were sometimes so abrupt. No more. They have sales quotas, and after 1000 calls, the rep. gets to know a hot prospect, or a time-waster very quickly.
