Buy A Car: Preparing Yourself to Buy a Second hand Car

One of the most significant, and perhaps most expensive purchases we ever make in life is when we buy a home or buy a car! Buying a car is both a complicated and difficult process. There are many choices, and many temptations in the market, but it's important to make an informed decision when investing in a car. Not everyone can buy a new car, some of us have limitations and that's why buying a second-hand car makes sense.

Buying a used car requires a completely different approach than buying a new car. While a new car has not covered extensive kilometres, nor has it been in any accident or theft etc, a used car could have experienced all these situations and much more! In order to clear up all mysteries and smoothen the ownership process that are involved when you buy a car, here's a checklist for those interested in making a used car purchase.

  • Objective Decision-making
Emotion plays a BIG role when you set out to buy a car - new or used. The car manufacturers and dealers prey on your emotions in the way they promote and market the new cars, luring us with great looks, 'powerful' engines, pulsating sound systems, and many unnecessary freebies. Sellers are not to emotional decision making, it's usually the prerogative of the buyer. Advice: Check your feeling, and try to make an objective decision.

  • Prime Factor - Budget
Although people buy a car, used, for many reasons, the most common and prime factor is budget. For many, despite having the cash to buy a new car, they many buy a car - just for its size - even if it means buying a second hand vehicle. Other reasons to buy a seconds car could be depreciation cost, lack of funds for buying a brand new sports car etc.

Whatever your reason, buying a second hand car means accepting that it will not be in prime condition. The used car will read thousands of kilometres on the odometer; have a worn and torn engine, suspension, transmission, brakes and tyres. Your aim, when you set out to buy a car, should be to get the best car for your money and it's very important that you learn how to make as accurate an assessment of the second hand car's condition as possible.

  • Gathering Information
After you identity the used cars most suitable for you in terms of budget and condition, it's time to gather information about them. Check the road test reports from when the cars were new, find out about the fuel consumption, performance, towing capacity, accidents if any, and any and everything else that may seems important for you to make the right choice. And don't forget to note the standard and safety features.

  • Where to buy the car
There are three main places to shop - Private, Dealers, and Auctions.

While buying from a reputable dealer ensures a clear title, correct odometer reading and a warranty, buying at an auction can help you save some money. But once you buy the car at an auction there's no going back. Buying privately would allow you time to check the car, test drive it, and even negotiate a better price if you happen to be a good negotiator! But you will have to make do without a warranty.

Remember, don't rush into buying the first car you find attractive. After all, not all that glitters is gold. Once you narrow down on a car make, take your trusted mechanic along with you, and make a few more checks before removing the wad of cash to bring your purchase back home!
